Historically, the Robusto vitola was named after the Rothschild family. This famous 19th-century banking family favored shorter, thicker cigars, a size later called Robusto. Robusto cigars first gained popularity in Cuba and gradually spread worldwide. Due to its moderate size and full flavor, Robusto became a flagship product for many cigar brands. Especially in the late 20th century, with the revival of hand-rolled cigars, Robusto became an essential classic for cigar aficionados.
