Hoyo de Monterrey is one of Cuba's six major brands and an existing pre-revolution brand, one of Havana's oldest cigar brands. It was founded by José Gener in 1865. The name derives from the founder's namesake estate "Hoyo de Monterrey" in the world's premier tobacco-growing region "Vuelta Abajo," referring to the depressed terrain ideal for tobacco cultivation. The founder also owned another brand, La Escepción. Hoyo de Monterrey's product line primarily consists of low-strength cigars. Another non-Cuban brand with the same name exists on the market.
