This cigar was launched in 1989, having a 32-year history by 2021. It has undergone multiple generations of band changes, currently using the "G" generation band (missing E and F generations). "Esplendidos" means "splendid" or "radiant" in Spanish. The domestic Chinese translation "导师" (Dǎoshī, Mentor) seems to be based on the phonetic ending and has become conventional over the years.
Initially, the Esplendidos cigar was given as a Cuban state gift to diplomats before being developed as a commercial product. Its tobacco leaf grading is higher, and the field output is somewhat special. According to factory codes, most Cohiba Esplendidos are produced at the main El Laguito factory, but this cigar also has secondary production lines and shares production with other Cohiba cigars. This makes Esplendidos a prestigious cigar, beloved by a wide range of cigar aficionados.
